Killzone 3 Steel Rain Map Pack Reportedly Dated for March 29 at $4.99

Killzone 3 players looking for fresh battlegrounds may not have long to wait. Reports circulating this weekend say the Steel Rain map pack will arrive on the North American PlayStation Store this Tuesday, March 29, priced at $4.99. That would be a fair price for two new multiplayer maps, but it comes with an important caveat: Guerrilla Games and Sony have not yet announced an official date or price, so consider this unconfirmed until it shows up on the PlayStation Blog or the store itself.

Junkyard And Stahl Arms Draw On The Campaign

Steel Rain was first revealed by Guerrilla in late February, when the studio shared details and a short trailer on its official Killzone blog. The pack adds two multiplayer maps, and both of them draw on locations from the single player campaign.

The first, Junkyard, is set in a Helghan scrap processing facility littered with wrecked vehicles and broken exoskeletons, where Helghast and ISA forces battle over salvageable weapons and hardware. It supports Guerrilla Warfare, the game’s straight team deathmatch mode, for up to 16 players.

The second, Stahl Arms, takes place inside a Helghast research center where captured ISA soldiers are held and subjected to experiments. It is built for Warzone, Killzone’s signature mode that rotates objectives on the fly, and supports up to 24 players. The trailer released alongside the announcement focused on Junkyard, and Guerrilla said a video of Stahl Arms would follow.

A $4.99 Price Would Make Steel Rain An Easy Sell

Killzone 3 launched in North America on February 22 and in Europe on February 25. Guerrilla’s third mainline entry added stereoscopic 3D and PlayStation Move support, and its multiplayer offering includes Operations, a new objective driven mode with cinematic story beats layered on top of the action. Fresh maps are the lifeblood of any online shooter, and a steady flow of content will matter as Killzone 3 competes for players’ time with the year’s other big multiplayer games.

If the reported $4.99 price holds, it would put Steel Rain at the friendlier end of what console map packs typically cost, which makes it an appealing deal if accurate. Two maps for five dollars is an easy sell for anyone who plays regularly, especially with Stahl Arms supporting the larger Warzone matches the series is known for.

There is no word yet on timing or pricing for Europe, and it is also unclear whether PlayStation Plus subscribers will get any kind of discount or early access to the maps. We will update this story once Sony confirms the details, but if the reports are right, PS3 owners in North America will be fighting over Junkyard and Stahl Arms in a matter of days.
