Snap buys Illumix as it pushes ahead with next-gen AR glasses
Snap has acquired augmented reality software company Illumix, according to a report first published by Variety and cited by Road to VR. The deal is meant to support Snap’s upcoming AR glasses work, not just game development.
Illumix is based in the Bay Area and was founded in 2017. The company is known in part for Five Nights at Freddy’s AR: Special Delivery, but its broader focus is a perception layer for phones, AR glasses, and robots that helps software understand and respond to the physical world.
Variety reported that Snap is interested in Illumix’s mapping technology and its use in real-world experiences. Snap is also expected to adopt Illumix’s technology and platform while retaining most of the company’s staff.
Why the acquisition matters
Illumix CEO Kirin Sinha said the company’s spatial mapping and AR platform is designed to make AR experiences reliable in real-world environments, with persistent, context-aware content anchored to physical spaces. In the same statement, Sinha said the acquisition marks a major milestone for Illumix and a new chapter for the team and technology.
Snap has not yet publicly shown its next-generation AR glasses. The company’s AR push comes after recent layoffs that affected 1,000 team members, including 16% of Snap’s full-time employees, along with the closure of more than 300 open roles.
What to watch next
Road to VR notes that more could be revealed at Augmented World Expo later this month in Long Beach, California, where Snap CEO Evan Spiegel is scheduled to give a keynote titled Making Computing More Human.
For now, the Illumix deal suggests Snap is focusing on the software infrastructure behind its next-generation Specs glasses, with mapping and spatial understanding taking priority over AR games.
